Women's Soccer Roughs Up Duquesne, 2-1
10/20/2000 12:00:00 AM | Women's Soccer
The match was closely contested throughout. Things heated up, however, at the 34:27 mark when a controversial foul was called on the Colonials. GW head coach Tanya Vogel vehemently protested the call and earned the first yellow card of her coaching career. After the card the physical play increased, but the match remained scoreless throughout the first half.
Duquesne broke through first at the 53:28 mark when GW was called for a foul in the box, resulting in a penalty kick. Erin Marshall beat an otherwise flawless O'Malley to the lower right corner to give the Dukes a 1-0 lead.
The lead was short lived as Duquesne's goalkeeper, Michelle Guna, was called for tackling Coppedge in the box at 69:06. The smooth and skillful junior put the penalty kick in the bottom left corner of the net to tie the score at 1-1. Approximatelly four minutes later, Duquesne was called for a hand ball in the box, which resulted in another penalty kick. Coppedge was again able to beat Guna on the penalty kick, this time to the lower right corner of the net, to put the Colonials up 2-1 at the 73:29 mark.
The Dukes had a chance to tie the match on the fourth penalty kick of the game, but junior forward Abbie Burns' shot sailed above the crossbar at the 75:48 mark and the Colonials held on for a hard-fought victory.
GW returns to South Riding at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, October 22, to face St. Bonaventure. The Colonials also will honor senior captains Malynda Nichol (Penfield, NY/Penfield) and Melissa Schreibstein (Columbia, MD/Centennial) as part of Senior Day.
