Washington, DC - (October 13, 2000) - University of Rhode Island's Steven DeMoura scored twice early in the second half to lead the Rams against a bruised and battered GW squad.
The Colonials entered today's match down two starters, juniors Fridrik Omarsson and Jason Holloway, both hampered by nagging hamstring injuries. Holloway, second on the team in scoring, missed his first start of the season, and played sparingly, only seeing seven minutes of action in the first half. Omarsson, a key player in GW's defense, was unable to play.
The Colonials played a solid match against a potent offense, denying the Rams the entire first half. Junior goalkeeper Nick Parypinski was solid in the net tallying eight saves on 15 shots before the break. However, URI's constant pressure took a toll on the Colonials, and the Rams finally broke through in the 52nd minute.
URI's senior midfielder DeMoura scored an unassisted goal off a defensive clear. GW was able to deny URI's first attempt on goal off a free kick by DeMoura, but a miscue on the clear gave DeMoura a chance to hook a shot from the top of the box past a shielded Parypinski. The Rams' second score came less than six minutes later when URI's Nicholas McCreath found an open DeMoura on the weak side of net for an easy goal. URI added a late score in the 82nd minute by sophomore Peter Benevides who converted a pass from senior Peos Tenden placing it in the top right corner of the net out of the reach of a leaping Parypinski.
The Colonials had difficulty dealing with the slightly faster and opportunistic Rams lineup, and were unable to gel on offense mustering only five shots for the match. Parypinski, despite surrendering three scores, played well making a number of difficult saves in the face of unrelenting pressure.
