Colonials Tally 12th-Consecutive Victory
DAYTON, OH (Jan. 20) -- George Washington shot 65% from the field in the first half enroute to opening a 47-23 halftime lead and cruised to an 82-66 victory over Dayton tonight in the University of Dayton Arena. The win was GW's 12th-consecutive as the 24th-ranked Colonials improved their record to 14-2 for the season, 5-0 in the Atlantic 10 Conference.
Junior forward Petra Dubovcova led GW with 16 points on 6-9 shooting and pulled down eight rebounds. Senior all-American Elisa Aguilar scored 15 points, all in the first half, and dished three assists in 21 minutes. Freshman guard Cathy Joens came off the bench to score 13 points behind 4-4 three-point shooting, and senior forward Starr Jefferson tallied 10 points and seven rebounds.
Christi Hester led Dayton (8-9, 3-3) with 19 points, all coming in the second half. Cyndi Stull scored 12 points and grabbed six rebounds.
GW looked every bit the top-25 team in the first half as the Colonials quickly established an 11-4 lead on a Dubovcova jumper two and a half minutes into the contest. Dayton trimmed the GW lead to 11-8 before the Colonials scored 13 unanswered points to take a 24-8 lead on a Kristeena Alexander layup with 12:56 left in the first half. GW led by as much as 26 points in the half before establishing a 47-23 halftime cushion.
While the Colonials were deadly accurate in shooting in the first half (20-31, 64.5%), Dayton was equally as cold, making just 8 of 28 attempts from the field (28.6%).
GW led by 27 points when junior guard Corrin Reid swiped a steal from Shannon McFadden at midcourt and dropped in a layup with 6:17 remaining in the game to give GW a 77-50 lead.Dayton managed to whittle away the GW lead late but never seriously threatened the Colonials as GW was in control of the contest.
GW ended the game shooting 55.7% (34-61) from the field while Dayton managed 38.6% (22-57) accuracy. The Colonials were 8-18 (44.4%) from three-point range, led by Joens' 4-4 effort. Dayton connected on just one trey.
The Colonials were whistled for 27 fouls, sending Dayton to line for 37 free throw attempts as the Flyers scored 21 points from the stripe on just 56.8% accuracy.
GW's Alexander, who leads the Atlantic 10 in scoring in conference games with 16.3 points per game, played just two minutes after suffering from flu-like symptoms the past several days. Alexander is expected to be available for GW's game Saturday at Xavier.
