George Washington Women Preseason No. 11

WASHINGTON, D.C. (Sept. 20, 1999) -- The Women's Basketball News Service ranked George Washington No. 11 in their preseason Top-25 released today.
Senior guard Elisa Aguilar (Madrid, Spain), considered by many observers an early front-runner for Atlantic 10 Player-of-the-Year recognition, was named third team preseason all-America. Aguilar, the 1998 Atlantic 10 Conference Rookie-of-the-Year, was a first-team Atlantic 10 All-Conference selection last year after being named to the second team in 1998. Last year, national women's basketball analyst and broadcaster Mimi Griffin called Aguilar one of the top five shooting guards in the nation.
Freshman guard Lindsey Davidson was named to the All-Freshman second team. Davidson was a third team Parade all-American last year at Brea Olinda High School in Brea, CA.
GW receives the preseason recognition largely on the strength of the backcourt. In addition to Aguilar and Davidson, GW returns senior Marlo Egleston (Elkland, PA), junior Kristeena Alexander (Hempstead, NY), junior Corrin Reid (Alexandria, VA) and adds freshman swing player Cathy Joens (Irvine, CA). Egleston is a veteran player with deadly three-point shooting accuracy. Alexander is a fierce competitor with an explosive first step and exceptional ball-handling skills. Reid provides depth off the bench and offers either an outside jumper or smooth, gliding drive to the basket. Joens is a promising guard/forward who was a teammate of Davidson's on the California Academy AAU team in Orange County.
GW opens the season on Friday, Nov. 19, on the road at Vanderbilt. The Colonials open the home slate on Mon., Nov. 22 when Howard visits the Charles E. Smith Center.
