WASHINGTON, D.C. (Sept. 15, 1999) -- The George Washington University women's basketball team faces a challenging schedule again this season, potentially facing six teams that appeared in the NCAA Tournament as well as WNIT champion Arkansas.
The Colonials are assured of playing five games against teams that appeared in the NCAA Tournament last year. Rutgers reached the Elite Eight and Atlantic 10 foe Virginia Tech reached the Sweet 16. The Atlantic 10's St. Joseph's and Xavier reached the second round. Santa Clara, who lost in the first round of the NCAA Tournament last year, visits the Charles E. Smith Center in December. GW might play Southern Methodist, who reached the second round in the NCAA Tournament, in the second round of SMU's Thanksgiving tournament in Dallas.
GW tips off the season with a difficult road contest at Southeastern Conference opponent Vanderbilt on November 20. GW plays their home opener two days later when Howard visits the Charles E. Smith Center. The Colonials will play six home games in December, beginning with the Rutgers tilt on Sat., Dec. 4. After a Dec. 7 game with Albany, GW opens Atlantic 10 competition with a game at La Salle on Dec. 11. Villanova, Santa Clara, Maryland-Eastern Shore and Seton Hall all come to DC in the second half of the month.
GW begins the new year with a challenging game at defending WNIT champion Arkansas on Jan. 3.
The Colonials are slated for two Atlantic 10 Television Network games this season: Sun., Jan. 9 at Virginia Tech and Sun., Feb. 20 versus Xavier at Smith Center.
Featuring all-America and Atlantic 10 Conference Player-of-the-Year candidate Elisa Aguilar, GW will likely display a guard-oriented, high-pressure defense, up-tempo look this season. Aguilar, a senior guard from Madrid, Spain, was a first-team all-conference selection last year after being a pre-season all-American. GW's incoming recruiting class features 5-9 guard Lindsey Davidson, 5-11 guard/forward Cathy Joens and 6-0 forward Erica Lawrence. Davidson was a third team Parade all-American last year as a senior at Brea Olinda High School in Brea, CA, and is considered an early candidate for Atlantic 10 Rookie-of-the-Year honors.
