McGovern Named Administrative Assistant

WASHINGTON, D.C. (July 23, 1999) -- Jimmy McGovern has been named to the position of Administrative Assistant for men's basketball at The George Washington University, head coach Tom Penders has announced. McGovern replaces Brian Blaney who resigned from the position to become an assistant coach for men's basketball at Stony Brook.
McGovern's duties at GW include team travel arrangements and working with the day-to-day operations of the team. He also will serve as co-Director of GW's summer basketball camp.
McGovern came to GW after serving as an assistant coach at Catholic University for the past four seasons (1996-99). During McGovern's four years on the Catholic staff, the Cardinals posted a 79-32 (.712) record and competed in three NCAA tournaments while twice advancing as far as the "Sweet 16."
A 1994 graduate of Rhode Island College, McGovern also attended the Community College of Rhode Island where he led the Knights to a pair of appearances in the National Junior College Athletic Association playoffs. As a freshman in 1989-91, his team advanced to the Final Eight, while the next season, it played for the 1991 National Championship.
The Knights were ranked as high as eighth nationally during McGovern's two years there.
McGovern also spent two years as a physical education instructor at Northwestern High School in Hyattsville, MD.
The Coventry, RI, native has been an instructor at several summer basketball camps including the University of Virginia, the University of Maryland, Providence College, Five Star and Eastern Invitational. He also coached the Rhode Island Select 18-and-under A.A.U. team from 1993-95.
