Rogers Named GW's MVP For 1998-99

WASHINGTON, D.C. (April 30, 1999) -- GW senior Shawnta Rogers (Baltimore, MD/Lake Clifton) was named the Colonials Most Valuable Player at the 1999 Men's Basketball Awards banquet Thursday. Graduate student Yegor Mescheriakov (Minsk, Belarus/Republic College of Olympic Reserve) was awarded Ironman honors and given the Academic Effort Award. Mescheriakov was the team's second-leading scorer with 17.6 points per game and was GW's leading rebounder with 6.8 rpg.
Junior Mark Lund (Klawock, AK/Klawock) was the recipient of the Desire Award given to the player who best exemplifies the work habits, hustle and motivation to help the team succeed.
Freshman Andry Sola (Oakville, Ontario, Canada) was accorded the Sixth Man Award while sophomore Mike King (Baltimore, MD/Lake Clifton) was given the team's Defense Award. The Colonials Patrick Ngongba (Bangui, Cent. African Republic/Calvert Hall) was named the team's Most Improved Player and freshman Albert Roma (Balenya, Spain/Winchendon) was named the team's Rookie of the Year.
Rogers led nation in steals (3.5 spg) and was the 1999 A-10 Player of the Year after leading the league in scoring (20.7), assists (6.7), steals and free throw percentage (.868). He also was the recipient of the Academic Challenge Award.
GW posted a 20-9 overall record and won the Atlantic 10 Conference West Division title. The Colonials fell to No. 17 Indiana in the first round of the NCAA Tournament at Orlando, FL.
