McCalla, Wilee to Compete in NCAA Gymnastics Regionals

WASHINGTON, D.C. (March 30, 1999) -- The George Washington University gymnastics team will be represented at the NCAA Regional Championship by sophomore Darden Wilee (Chesapeake, VA/Great Bridge) and freshman Devin McCalla (Dallas, TX/J.J. Pearce) in the all-around. The competition will be held April 10, at West Virginia University.
Wilee, the 1998 Atlantic 10 Most Outstanding Rookie Performer, finished second at the Atlantic 10 Championships in the all-around with a career-high 39.200 points. Her score places her second on GW's all-time performance list for the event. Also at the Conference championships, Wilee placed second on the vault with a season-high score of 9.800. Her top scores on the other apparatuses for the season are 9.850 on the uneven bars, 9.825 on the balance beam and 9.875 on the floor.
McCalla received the 1999 Atlantic 10 Most Outstanding Rookie Performer award and was named to the A-10 All-Conference Team for her performances at the Conference championships. The six-time A-10 Rookie of the Week tied for first on the floor exercise with a score of 9.875. Her top all-around score of the season, a 39.300 posted in a competition against Towson March 3, is the highest score in GW history for the event. McCalla currently holds the second-highest scores on GW's all-time performance list on the uneven bars (9.925) and on the balance beam (9.925). Her 9.900 on the floor exercise places her third on the GW record list. McCalla posts a 9.825 on the vault.
GW won the 1999 Bell Atlantic - Atlantic 10 gymnastics championships March 27 in Philadelphia. It was the Colonials' second consecutive A-10 Conference gymnastics title.
