WASHINGTON, D.C. (March 28, 1999) -- The George Washington University gymnastics team not only captured its second straight Atlantic 10 Championship title by scoring a school-record high 194.650 points, but also walked away with two prestigious honors -1999 Atlantic 10 Coach of Year for head coach Margie Foster-Cunningham and 1999 A-10 Most Outstanding Rookie Performer for freshman Devin McCalla (Dallas, TX/J.J. Pearce). It is the second straight year the Colonials have won both honors.
Sophomore Darden Wilee (Chesapeake, VA/Great Bridge) led the Colonials with a second place finish in the all-around with a season high score of 39.200. Wilee finished second on the vault with a season high 9.800, fifth on the bars (9.800), eighth on the beam (9.775) and tenth on the floor exercise (9.725).
McCalla tied with teammate, freshman Kelly Banks (Council Bluffs, IA/St. Albert), for first place on the floor exercise with a score of 9.875, giving GW its only apparatus win. McCalla also finished fifth in the all-around. In addition to finishing first on the floor exercise, Banks also finished tied for second place on the balance beam with a season high score of 9.900. Banks' beam score places her third on GW's all-time performance list for that event. Both McCalla and Banks were named to the Atlantic 10 All-Conference Team.
The Colonials finished their season with an 11-16 record.
