Aguilar Hits For 20; Carlson Scores Career-High 16 Points
WASHINGTON, DC (Dec. 7) -- Senior All-American Elisa Aguilar scored 20 points to lead George Washington to a 95-46 pounding of Albany tonight in Smith Center. Five Colonials scored in double-figures as GW returned to action after upseting then-No. 7 Rutgers Saturday night.
Aguilar, who now has 930 career points as she closes in on the 1,000 career points milestone, had struggled early on this season but returned to her All-America form with 9-15 shooting from the field and five rebounds.
I'm happy to see Aguilar shoot the ball a lot better tonight, said GW Head Coach Joe McKeown. She's a great player so hopefully this will get her on track a bit.
Junior center Leslie Carlson also had a very strong game, tallying a career-high 16 points on 8-13 shooting.
Leslie has really worked hard to make herself a better player, and I think tonight showed the efforts of her hard work, said GW Head Coach Joe McKeown.
Freshmen Cathy Joens and Erica Lawrence each scored 12 points, with Joens pulling down six rebounds and Lawrence grabbing five. Junior forward Petra Dubovcova scored 10 points.
GW's backcourt was in fine form as GW recorded a season-low nine turnovers and a season-high 27 assists. Freshman guard Lyndsey Davidson dished six assists, junior Kristeena Alexander five and senior Marlo Egleston five while the trio committed no turnovers. Aguilar and junior Corrin Reid eached dished three assists while turning it over once apiece.
GW (4-2) seemed to lack an offensive rhythm early in the first half as Albany (2-4) kept the score close. Albany's Lauren O'Brien tallied a layup with 14:54 remaining in the first half to tie the score at 11-11. GW then rattled off an 11-0 run keyed by seven points and a steal from freshman Cathy Joens to grab a 22-11 lead on an Aguilar jumper with 13:13 remaining. GW led by as many as 23 points in the first half before holding a 50-28 advantage at intermission.
The Colonials opened the second half with a 10-1 run to grab a 60-29 lead with 17:10 remaining, and the only question remaining was the final margin of victory.
I was a little disappointed in the first half with some of our execution, said McKeown. The second half we played a lot harder and opened the game up. I felt like we got running a little more and got some easier shots. It was a good game to come back off a great win over Rutgers. I was concerned when we were a little flat to start with, but I am proud of our effort in the second half.
GW returns to action Saturday at 1:00 p.m. when the Colonials travel to La Salle to open Atlantic 10 Conference play.
