Aguilar Tallies 1,000th Career Point In GW's 7th Consecutive Win
WASHINGTON, DC (Dec. 30) -- Four Colonials scored in double figures as George Washington powered past Seton Hall, 93-58, tonight in Smith Center.
Senior preseason all-America guard Elisa Aguilar led all scorers with 18 points and added nine assists and seven steals. Aguilar became the 17th Colonial to reach the 1,000 career points milestone when she nailed a three-pointer from deep in the left corner with 2:04 remaining in the game.
"I'm really proud of Aguilar," said GW Head Coach Joe McKeown. "She's scored 1,000 points in two-and-a-half years, which is a pretty good accomplishment for any player, let alone a point guard. It just goes to show what a great player she is and what a great career she's had at GW."
GW junior forward Petra Dubovcova scored 16 points on 6-8 shooting from the field. Freshman forward Erica Lawrence scored 12 points on 6-8 shooting from the field, and junior guard Kristeena Alexander added 10 points and seven assists.
Freshman forward Cecilia Lindqvist led Seton Hall (6-4) with 15 points on the strength of 9-10 shooting from the free throw line.
George Washington's full-court press and swarming defense was too much for the Pirates to handle. GW (9-2) forced Seton Hall into committing a season-high 34 turnovers. GW contested almost every shot, and the Pirates were able to manage just 13 field goals for the game while shooting 28.9% (13-45) from the field, a season-low for a GW opponent. The Pirates' Arminda Moreno, who led the team with 12.7 points per game entering the contest, was held without a field goal.
GW shot a season-high 53.7% (36-67) from the field, dished a season-high 32 assists and swiped a season-high 22 steals.
The Colonials scored the first nine points of the game and jumped out to a 17-4 lead on Starr Jefferson's layup with 14:06 remaining in the first half. Lindqvist made a free throw for Seton Hall with 6:25 remaining in the half to cut the GW lead to 24-16. GW answered with a 22-7 run to close the half and take a 46-23 lead into intermission.
Seton Hall never threatened in the second half, and GW's final 35-point margin of victory was the largest lead of the game for the Colonals.
"I thought we played real hard in spurts," said McKeown. "We stopped Seton Hall from making any real runs, and never let them get any momentum, and that was really important."
The victory was GW's seventh-consecutive win as the Colonials improved to 9-2 on the season. GW also finished December undefeated (7-0) and improved their record at home in Smith Center to 7-0 on the season. The Colonials are 72-8 (90%) at home in Smith Center over the past six seasons.
"We're playing 11 people right now and everybody's contributing, and that's what's exciting about this team," said McKeown.
With victories over then-No. 7 Rutgers (63-58) on Dec. 4 and over Villanova (60-47) on Dec. 13, GW improved their record against Big East teams to 3-0 for the season.
GW returns to action Monday night with a 7:00 pm (CST) game at Arkansas. Like GW, Arkansas is receiving votes in the national polls.
