Aguilar, Joens Named To All-Tournament Team
DALLAS, TX (Nov. 27, 1999) -- George Washington's attempt to feast on Mustang in the championship game of the SMU Hoops For The Cure Thanksgiving tournament in Dallas fell short as SMU handed GW a 77-62 loss in Moody Coliseum.
Senior guard Elisa Aguilar, freshman forward Cathy Joens and junior center Leslie Carlson paced GW with 13 points apiece. Joens added five rebounds and five assists, while junior guard Corrin Reid contributed eight rebounds. Aguilar and Joens were subsequently named to the all-tournament team of the event.
Sloppy play and poor shooting were the undoing for the Colonials (2-2). GW shot just 40% (4-10) from the free throw line and 28.6% (6-21) from three-point land, in sharp contrast to the team's 73.9% (17-23) from the line and 44.8% (13-29) performance against Central Michigan Friday The Mustangs (3-0) outhustled the Colonials and outrebounded GW 46-34 for the game. Normally a very solid ballhandling team, GW committed a season-high 24 turnovers in the loss.
SMU ran out to a 8-0 lead early in the game, and led by as many as 11 points midway through the half. With SMU holding a 27-17 lead with 4:18 to play in the half, Aguilar hit a trey, Carlson made a pair of layups, junior forward Petra Dubovcova hit a jumper, Kristeena Alexander hit a free throw and Joens converted a three-point play as GW rattled off a 13-2 run to grab a 30-29 lead with 55 seconds remaining. Anika Calvert hit a runer at the buzzer to give the Mustangs a 31-30 lead at intermission.
The second half was all SMU, however. Center Karlin Kennedy seemed unstoppable in the paint, tallying 15 points in the half and totaling 25 points and 12 rebounds for the game. Guard D-dra Rucker scored 12 points in the second to give her 19 for the contest. Calvert tallied 11 points for the game, and Katie Remke pulled down 15 rebounds.
A major advantage for SMU was free throw shooting. The Mustangs were 20-32 (62.5%) from the line after GW was whistled for 19 fouls. The Colonials, however, were sent to the line just 10 times, making just four of the attempts, after SMU was whistled for 15 fouls.
The Colonials return to action Saturday night at Smith Center with a 7:00 pm contest against nationally-ranked Rutgers.
