WASHINGTON, DC (November 2)-- Preseason all-American guard Elisa Aguilar led George Washington with 19 points behind 5-7 three-point shooting as GW cruised to an 80-50 victory over University of Latvia Select tonight in Smith Center. Aguilar tallied her 19 points in just 20 minutes of playing time.
The Colonials opened a 12-1 lead just over six minutes into the contest and never looked back. The stifling GW defense forced Latvia into 29 turnovers and 27.9% shooting for the game, while GW outmuscled Latvia for a 47-33 advantage in rebounds.
We wanted to scored 80 points and have everyone play hard for 40 minutes tonight, said Head Coach Joe McKeown. We got the 80 points and I was pleased with our effort. We've always been a strong defensive team, and now we're focusing a bit more on offense. Overall I was pleased with the outcome.
Junior forward Petra Dubovcova scored 13 points and grabbed seven rebounds. Senior forward Katarina Baskova scored nine points and tallied six rebounds. Senior Starr Jefferson was impressive in her debut at the center position, scoring nine points and grabbing eight rebounds.
With McKeown using the game as an opportunity to see his team in action as a unit for the first time, 10 of GW's 11 players saw double-figures in minutes played.
GW returns to action Sun., Nov. 14 with a 4:00 pm exhibition game against Vologda Russia. GW tips off the regular season Nov. 19 at Vanderbilt.
