WASHINGTON, DC (Oct. 3, 1999) -- Senior captain Bill Blesi scored a golden goal in overtime to lift out-played La Salle to a 1-0 victory over George Washington this afternoon in Atlantic 10 Conference men's soccer action at South Riding Field.
Blesi controlled a loose ball at the top of the GW box after a La Salle throw-in and managed to spin to unleash a 16-yard shot into the left side netting for the game-winning goal.
George Washington dominated the run-of-play from the opening kickoff, maintaining possession for over 78% of the match. The GW defense was nearly impenetrable all afternoon as the Explorers struggled to create any threatening scoring chances. GW's midfield, led by sophomore Michael Goldman, was well-organized and created numerous attacks for the Colonials as GW commanded the neutral third.
The Colonials posted a 24-12 advantage in shots, including 12-4 in the first half. Midfielder Gregg Friedman and forwards Jason Holloway and Matthew Osborne posted four shots apiece in the match.
George Washington goalkeeper Nick Parypinski recorded seven saves for the match but was rarely tested. Don Tuohey tallied eight saves enroute to posting the shutout for La Salle.
