Donaghue Nets Overtime Goal in 2-1 Win

PHILADELPHIA, PA (Oct. 3, 1999) -- Freshman Caroline Donaghue (St. Catharines, Ontario/Denis Morris) found the back of the net in the 104th minute to help The George Washington women's soccer team defeat the La Salle Explorers, 2-1, in overtime on Sunday.
Donaghue's goal, the first of her collegiate career, trickled by La Salle goalkeeper Kaitlin Glass on an assist from sophomore Tiffany Williams (Sykesville, MD/Liberty). Williams has scored points in each of the last three games.
In a match dominated by La Salle's offense, in which it took 33 shots (versus 13 for the Colonials), sophomore goalkeeper Shannon Ashfield (Scarborough, Ontario/Bethune Collegiate) made the difference, recording a career-high 15 saves in 104 minutes.
Senior Katy McQuillin (Signal Mountain, TN/Notre Dame H.S.) opened the scoring with a goal in the 22nd minute, assisted by sophomore Erin Coppedge (Annapolis, MD/St. Mary's). McQuillin's goal moves her to 18th among all-time GW women's scoring leaders (31 points).
The Colonials improve to 2-1 in Atlantic 10 play (2-9-0 overall) while the Explorers move to 1-2 (5-6).
GW returns to action Friday when Massachusetts comes to town for a 3 p.m. match.
