Duquesne Defeats Men's Soccer 1-0 on Questionable Goal
10/21/1999 12:00:00 AM | Men's Soccer
The questionable goal developed on a Duquesne counter-attack after a player fired a long ball out of the Duquesne defensive third of the field. As the pass approached the upper-right corner of GW's box, GW goalkeeper Michael Jelencovich and Gingrich converged on the ball. Jelencovich began his slide to grab the ball, and Gingrich tapped the bouncing ball past Jelencovich with his hand into the lower portion of the box, leaving Gingrich with an unchallenged shot into the open net.
George Washington dominated the match from the first minute, outshooting Duquesne 5-0 in the first 15 minutes. Sophomore midfielder Michael Goldman kept the midfield organized while senior midfielder Evan Nierman and freshman midfielder Kirk Lewis were particularly aggressive. The GW defense, playing without sophomore starter Ted Tucker due to a yellow card accumulation suspension, stymied Duquesne's normally potent offense with tight man-marking in the back. George Washington pressured the Duquesne defense throughout the match, while the Dukes primarily relied on brief counterattacks.
George Washington outshot the Dukes 13-3 for the match. Duquesne goalkeeper Terry McNelis tallied two saves while Jelencovich recorded none.
