Rhode Island Defeats Women's Soccer, 4-2

WASHINGTON, DC -- Despite two first half goals by sophomore Kesha Christoph (Newark, DE/Tatnall School), The George Washington University women's soccer team lost 4-2 to a Rhode Island squad that scored three second-half goals at rainy South Riding Field on Sunday.
The weather played a major factor, as a rainstorm reached its peak as the match began. The Rams scored first amid the rain, as Shannon Kittleson netted what would be her first of two goals for the game in the 10th minute, assisted by Heather Kasparek and Catherine Zanni. The Colonials responded in the 29th minute, as Christoph netted her first goal of the game on a pass from classmate Tiffany Williams (Sykesville, MD/Liberty). Ten minutes later, Christoph struck again, this time sneaking a shot past an out-of-position Rams' goalkeeper Kate Hirsch. GW maintained its lead as halftime approached.
The first half of the final 45 minutes was controlled by GW, as the team had many scoring opportunities. However, Rhode Island tied the game in the 62nd minute when Gina Rosen scored. The momentum changed and in the 75h minute, Kittleson tallied her second goal, the game-winning goal, with an assist from Zanni. Three minutes later, Stephanie Boisvert scored the final goal of the game to make it a 4-2 contest.
GW goalkeeper Shannon Ashfield (Scarborough, Ontario/Bethune Collegiate) made four saves in the match, while Hirsch recorded 10 saves.
For the match, GW outshot Rhode Island 16-14.
The Colonials return to the pitch on Friday with a 2 p.m. match Friday at St. Bonaventure.
