Jim Tarr ('60) competed in both the No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles spots throughout three of his four seasons as a standout for the George Washington men's tennis team from 1956-60. During Tarr's tenure, GW was a member of the Southern Athletic Conference, and on the strength of his play the Colonials won three straight Southern Conference championships. Tarr won both singles and doubles conference championships three straight years from 1958-60, and two of his doubles crowns were won with his brother and teammate, Jack Tarr, in 1958 and 1959.
Though his career concluded 51 years ago, Tarr still holds a spot in the Southern Conference record books. Amongst the conference leaders for most individual doubles titles won, Tarr sits atop the list, tied with four others, with three conference doubles titles. He is also tied for first with two others for most combined conference titles, with six.
Tarr, who lived in Atlanta, Ga., worked for Delta Air Lines for over 30 years, serving as a senior captain airline pilot. He also served as a helicopter pilot during the Vietnam War. Tarr passed away in March of 1995 after battling cancer. His teammate and brother, Jack, still resides in McLean, Va.
