Sierra Lange joined the GW softball coaching staff as a graduate assistant coach in August 2022 following a historic career on the diamond in Buff and Blue.
Â
Last spring, Lange closed out a decorated run leading the program with her excellence in the circle, at the plate, in the field and on the bases. The Plano, Texas, native was named an NFCA All-American and claimed repeat Atlantic 10 Pitcher of the Year honors as a graduate student, helping the Buff and Blue to a second straight conference regular season title and third consecutive postseason berth.
Â
She is the program’s first three-time All-Region First Team pick as well as a three-time All-Conference First Team selection, three-time All A-10 Championship Team honoree and a 2022 NCAA Woman of the Year nominee in recognition of her outstanding all-around achievements.
Â
Lange transitions into a coaching role while she completes work on her master’s degree in Management through the GW School of Business.
"We are thrilled to welcome Sierra Lange to our coaching staff," Schoonmaker said. "Sierra is one of the best to have ever worn the Buff and Blue, and she will continue to make a major impact as a coach."
"Sierra's passion for GW is second to none, and we couldn't be more excited for her to begin her coaching journey."
Long one of the nation’s top all-around contributors, Lange helped the Buff and Blue to reach unprecedented heights, often shining brightest in the most pressure-packed moments.
Â
Following an A-10 All-Rookie debut campaign in 2018, she burst onto the national scene as a sophomore in 2019 when she finished among the top five nationally in wins (31) and hits (85) while helping the program secure a share of its first conference title.
Â
After missing the abbreviated 2020 campaign due to injury, Lange came back strong in 2021 to lead GW to its first-ever NCAA Tournament berth. She was named A-10 Pitcher of the Year before being named Most Outstanding Player for her work on the Buff and Blue’s push to a title at the conference championship and then putting her best foot forward on the national stage at the Baton Rouge Regional.
Â
Returning as a grad student, Lange was sensational in 2022 en route to being named the program’s second All-American. She went 27-11 with a 2.40 ERA and 223 strikeouts in 230 2/3 innings and also slashed .333/.431/.512 out of the leadoff spot with 49 runs scored, 23 RBIs, 19 extra-base hits and 19 steals.
Â
Over the course of her career, Lange rewrote GW’s pitching record book, piling up 94 wins, 785 strikeouts, 91 complete games and 18 shutouts across 829 1/3 innings over 158 outings.
Â
Offensively, she ranks among the program’s all-time top five in in batting average (.377), hits (241), runs (169), RBIs (126), extra-base hits (76), total bases (370), on-base percentage (.438), slugging percentage (.578) and stolen bases (54).
Â
For her work in the classroom, Lange earned two A-10 All-Academic selections and was twice featured on the Easton/NFCA All-America Scholar-Athlete list. She earned her undergraduate degree in Organizational Sciences in May 2021.
Â
The coaching role gives Lange the chance to keep making a difference with the program working under Schoonmaker, who was named A-10 Coach of the Year last season.
Â
“I’m really excited to get a chance to witness the game I love from a different perspective,” Lange said. “I’m so grateful for the opportunity to be with the team again and help in any way I can!”
