Sam Bean joined the GW softball staff as an assistant coach in the late summer of 2025. Bean, from Rockwell, Texas, arrives at GW after a six-year playing career, which included stops at the University of Maryland, Lamar University, and the University of Alabama at Birmingham.
Bean’s playing career concluded in the spring with her graduate season at Maryland, where she finished with a commanding .271 AVG /.380 OBP/.511 SLG slash line as the Terps' starting catcher. A standout athletically and academically, she was named to the 2025 All-Big Ten Academic Team, and she was a B1G Sportsmanship Award Honoree.
Bean missed the 2024 season at Maryland due to injury, but she was commended for remaining active with the team in a coach-like capacity.
In her two seasons at Lamar, Bean collected 87 hits with a .283 AVG and 32 extra-base hits. Bean’s 2023 season at Lamar was highlighted by 28 walks, 21 RBI and a .932 OPS. She was named the Lamar softball newcomer of the year in 2022, before achieving Southland All-Academic First Team honors in 2023.
Bean spent two seasons at UAB, the 2020 shortened COVID year and 2021, and collected 28 hits in her first full season with the Dragons. Bean was a two-time recipient of Conference USA Commissioner’s Academic Medal, and she was named to the 2020 Conference USA Commissioner's Academic Honor Roll while at UAB.
