WASHINGTON – The Atlantic 10 Conference announced on Tuesday that GW pitcher Cece Smith has been named the A-10 Softball Pitcher of the Week. The award comes after three quality appearances at the Coach Cooke Memorial in Rock Hill, S.C., and is Smith's third career A-10 weekly award.
Smith totaled 13.1 innings across three appearances last weekend, in which she allowed five hits and three walks as she held the bases empty through much of her time in the circle. With 13 strikeouts, Smith averaged nearly one strikeout per inning as the junior from Atlanta bumped her career K total up to 242. Only one run was scored this past weekend against Smith, which came unearned vs. Winthrop.
The performance of the year in the circle, perhaps by any GW pitcher, came from Smith in her complete-game shutout vs. Presbyterian on Saturday. It was the first complete game and first shutout of the season for a GW pitcher, and Smith faced only four more than the minimum, allowing just two hits and two walks.
Smith is sporting a team-best 1.77 ERA with 18 Ks and an opposition Avg. of just .200.
GW heads to Orlando this weekend for five games at UCF's Charge On Classic, Feb. 27-March 1.
