WASHINGTON - Junior outfielder Ashley Corpuz and sophomore pitcher Sophia Torreso were dubbed the Atlantic 10 Player & Pitcher of the Week, respectively, the conference announced Monday afternoon. Both were instrumental to GW's 5-1 record over the last week, and each won their respective award for the second time this season.
Corpuz headlined the GW attack last week, hitting for both power and average. She boasted a .500 avg. (8-16) with two home runs, one double, five walks and four stolen bases. The left fielder had 10 RBI and scored five runs, which included home runs in back-to-back games against UAlbany, the latter of which was a grand slam. Corpuz's batch of home runs has her breaking GW single-season records and personal records, as her early-season surge is among the best starts in program history.
Torreso made four appearances in the circle last week and did not give up a single run. The sophomore from Bristol, Conn., only allowed three hits over 10.1 innings, while striking out 12 batters and holding opponents to a .091 average. Torreso's longest appearance was in her start vs. Holy Cross (5.2 IP), but perhaps her most important appearance was vs. UAlbany, when Torreso inherited a bases-loaded situation with one out in a one-run game, striking out two-consecutive batters to preserve the win.
GW looks to ride its momentum this week when it travels to Morgan State on Wednesday before hosting its A-10 opener vs. St. Bonaventure this weekend.
