GEORGE TOWN, Grand Cayman - GW men's basketball got back to its winning ways of the early season, trouncing Middle Tennessee, 92-79 on Monday night in the second of three games at the Cayman Islands Classic.
Eager to put last night behind them, the Buff & Blue roared out of the gate to a 15-6 lead and remained in control through the first half, taking a 49-41 lead into the intermission.
GW quickly pushed the lead to double digits and a scoop-and-score layup from Christian Jones forced an MTSU timeout with GW ahead 57-44 four minutes into the stanza. The Revolutionaries never let the lead slip below 12 the rest of the way and extended the advantage to as many as 24 before the Blue Raiders added some window dressing late to make the final score appear closer than it was.
Rafael Castro led the way offensively with 21 points on an efficient 7-of-9 shooting while three others joined in double digits. Christian Jones also was highly efficient, making 7-of-8 shots en route to a 16-point, five-assist day. Bubu Benjamin made all three of his 3s, finishing with 11 points and Trey Autry chipped in 10.
As a team, GW shot 57.4% from the floor, its best since March 2024, and made 11-of-22 triples to roll to its fourth 90-point effort of the season. A night after turning the ball over 24 times, GW showed great care of the rock, dishing out 19 assists to just nine turnovers.
GW will wrap up its trip in the Cayman Islands on Tuesday night when it takes on Murray State at 7:30 p.m. The game will once again air on Flo College.
