Men's Basketball Drops First Game of Cayman Classic, 92-86
11/23/2025 8:22:00 PM | Men's Basketball
GEORGE TOWN, Grand Cayman - Despite a valiant comeback attempt late in the second half, GW men's basketball suffered its first defeat of the 2025-26 campaign, falling to McNeese, 92-86.
The Buff & Blue trailed by 18 with 10:42 remaining before holding McNeese scoreless for the next six minutes and going on an elongated 19-4 run to get back in the game. Tre Dinkins spearheaded the comeback, scoring eight-consecutive points, including a 3-pointer with 3:08 remaining to get GW within a possession at 80-77.
But the achilles heel all day for GW reappeared following a stop when the 24th turnover of the night turned into a breakaway layup for McNeese and GW never had another chance with the ball within a possession. The Cowboys finished with a 29-6 edge in points off turnovers and held a 25-9 advantage in fast break points.
Garrett Johnson was phenomenal off the bench once again, posting a career-high 26 points, making 5-of-8 triples and 7-of-10 shots overall. Dinkins canned a quartet of 3s to finish with 16 points in the comeback effort. Rafael Castro gave GW three in double figures with 11 points and seven rebounds.
GW is right back in action on Monday evening when it takes on Middle Tennessee in the second game of the Cayman Islands Classic. Tip is scheduled for 5 p.m. with coverage on FloHoops.
