CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – No. 20 GW water polo finished the Harvard Invitational at 2-2 this weekend with victories over LIU and No. 8 (D-III) MIT, and losses to No. 19 Harvard and (RV) Brown. The Revolutionaries moved to 12-12 overall this season as it capped non-conference play in the Northeast.
No. 20 GW 10, (RV) Brown 13
Little separated the Revolutionaries and Bears early in the weekend opener. The sides closed a low-scoring first half tied at four goals apiece. GW grabbed the edge in the third, outscoring Brown, 4-3, but the Bears got through with a big fourth-quarter showing, netting six scores to pull ahead and claim its three-goal victory. Antonio Florena carried the weight for GW with five goals, two assists and two steals.
No. 20 GW 11, LIU 8
A big second quarter gave the Revolutionaries an edge in their second meeting of the season against the LIU Sharks. GW moved the ball well and scored five goals in the second – all by different Revolutionaries – to grab a 7-4 lead at half. GW extended the margin to 11-6 by the end of the third, and despite being shutout in the fourth quarter, GW's lead was sturdy enough to seal the 11-8 win and season sweep over LIU. Vasillije Marinkovic came up big for GW against the Sharks with 14 saves, while Adonis Vlassis, Florena and Ben McDade each tied with a team-high two goals apiece.
No. 20 GW 14, No. 19 Harvard 16
In Sunday's first game, the Buff & Blue faced a tough Crimson squad and played them tight the whole way, but GW wasn't able to overcome a good Harvard team as it fell, 16-14. With little separating the teams early, Harvard took a two-goal lead into halftime and extended its edge to three by the end of the third quarter, which was too much for GW to overcome in the last frame. Vlassis paced the Revolutionaries with four goals, followed by Austin Nelson with three. Marinkovic had 10 saves in the contest.
No. 20 GW 17, No. 8 (D-III) MIT 10
The Revolutionaries dominated from the start against the MIT Engineers, holding a comfortable lead the entire match on their way to a 17-10 win. GW's defense clamped down in the first half, allowing just two goals while the Buff & Blue offense scored seven to open up a lead. MIT evened the play in the second half, but the damage had been done as GW cruised to victory. Valssis led GW in points with five goals and two assists in the weekend finale, followed by Yam Kabakov with two goals and three assists. Marinkovic added 12 saves to his ledger with one assist.
