WASHINGTON - GW women's swimmers Ava DeAngelis and Ava Topolewski have set out to Athens, Ga. to compete at the 2024 NCAA Women's Swimming and Diving Championships, hosted by the University of Georgia. DeAngelis and Topolewski will represent the Buff & Blue in five total events from Thursday through Saturday. Prelims each day begin at 10 a.m., followed by finals at 6 p.m., and every session of the meet will be available on ESPN+.
HISTORY IN THE MAKING
DeAngelis and Topolewski each qualified for the NCAA Championships for the first time in their careers and will become the sixth and seventh members of GW women's swimming and diving to attend the national meet. GW is sending multiple student-athletes in the same year to NCAAs for the third time ever, as Topolewski and DeAngelis become the first duo to attend since Meghan Mitchell and Bambi Bowman, who both went in 1994 and 1995. DeAngelis and Topolewski are joined by NCAA qualifier Djurdje Matic from the men's team as part of the largest combined NCAA contingent ever sent by the Buff & Blue.
DEANGELIS IN THE BREASTSTROKE
DeAngelis is set to participate in two events at UGA, the 100-yard breaststroke and 200–yard breaststroke. The Duxbury, Mass., native qualified for the field via her 100-yard breaststroke time (59.75), which she set at this year's A-10 Championships as she broke the program and conference record and won gold. DeAngelis also set her personal-best time and broke the program record in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:09.94) at the A-10 Championships on her way to a silver medal in the event. This week, DeAngelis is seeded 37th in the 100-yard breaststroke and 39th in the 200-yard breaststroke.
TOPOLEWSKI TAKES ON DISTANCE FREE AND FLY
Topolewski is scheduled to swim three events in Georgia, the 500-yard freestyle, 1,650-yard freestyle and 200-yard breaststroke. The Grand Prairie, Texas, native earned her invitation via her 1,650-yard freestyle time at the A-10 Championships (16:08.48), where she cut roughly 20 seconds off her personal-best time and set an A-10 and program record while winning gold. Topolewski also finished in second place at the A-10 Championships with a personal-best time in the 500-yard freestyle (4:44.44), and set a personal-best as she won the 200-yard butterfly prelims (1:58.77). Topolewski is seeded 24th in the 1,650-yard freestyle, 50th in the 200-yard butterfly, and 57th in the 500-yard freestyle.
