
Swimming and Diving Falls in Season Opener to Virginia Tech

WASHINGTON - The George Washington men's and women's swimming and diving teams fell to Virginia Tech, 214.00-86.00 on the men's side and 191.00-109.00 on the women's side, on Friday and Saturday in a competitive season-opening meet at the Smith Center.
WOMEN'S HIGHLIGHTS

Dara Reyblat got the season started on a high note for the Revolutionaries, winning both the 1m (261.60) and 3m (264.08) boards on Friday evening. Newcomer Veronica Fyfe had a strong debut on the boards as well, finishing in third in the 3m (258.60).

Long-distance specialist Ava Topolewski picked up right where she left off last year and won the 1,000-yard freestyle (10:16.92). Molly Smyers followed closely behind and took bronze (10:36.55). Later in the meet, Topolewski also took silver in the 500-yard freestyle (5:05.68).

Moriah Freitas won gold in the 100-yard butterfly (57.48), an event in which she was a finalist for at last year's A-10 Championships.

The women's 200-yard medley relay, composed of Marlee Rickert, Ava DeAngelis, Freitas and Phoebe Wright, took second place (1:46.92).

Wright paced GW and finished second in both the 100-yard backstroke (57.67) and 200-yard backstroke (2:02.51).

DeAngelis won silver in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:05.88), missing out on first place by just .02 seconds.

Freitas and Topolewski took second (2:08.01) and third (2:08.47) in the 200-yard butterfly, respectively.

Newcomer Riley Kudlac earned a spot on the podium in her first meet for the Buff and Blue, finishing the 100-yard freestyle in third place (53.47).

The 400-yard freestyle relay closed out the meet with a second-place finish (3:34.44), swam by Julia Knox, Wright, Rickert and Olivia Tighe.
MEN'S HIGHLIGHTS

First-year divers Michael Wood (298.95), Holden Wheeler (287.25) and Ben Bradley (266.33) took third, fourth and fifth on the 3m board, respectively.

Connor Rodgers, who set a new A-10 record last year in the 200-yard butterfly, paced all swimmers and won gold in the 200-yard butterfly (1:51.37). Rodgers later finished the 200-yard IM in third place (1:53.69).

2022 NCAA qualifier Djurdje Matic paced all swimmers and won gold in the 100-yard butterfly (48.63) - an event which he won at the 2023 A-10 Championships.

The men's 200-yard medley relay, swam by Karol Mlynarczyk, Preston Lin, Daniel Nagy and Matic, finished with a bronze medal (1:32.66).

Daniel Choi paced the Revolutionaries in the 1000-yard freestyle, finishing the race in third place (9:36.16).

Mlynarczyk finished with a bronze medal in the 100-yard backstroke (50.50). Afterwards, Mlynarczyk backed up his third-place finish with a silver medal in the 200-yard backstroke (1:49.76).

Matic led all GW swimmers and won bronze in the 50-yard freestyle (21.13).

Toni Dragoja did well in his first meet as a Revolutionary, taking home third place in the 100-yard freestyle (47.00).

Misha Lyubavskiy raced to a bronze medal in both the 500-yard freestyle (4:37.56).

In the last race of the meet, the GW 400-yard freestyle relay finished in second place (3:05.82), swam by Dragoja, Dylan Koo, Mlynarczyk and Matic.
