Swimming and Diving Closes Rutgers Invite with Multiple Podium Sweeps on Saturday

PISCATAWAY, N.J. - The George Washington men's and women's swimming and diving teams wrapped up the Rutgers Invite with Sessions Two and Three on Saturday. GW had high finishes all-around, including a pair of individual race wins for Djurdje Matic, and two fully Buff and Blue podiums in the women's 400-yard IM and the men's 100-yard butterfly.
WOMEN'S HIGHLIGHTS

GW got out to a fast start on Saturday morning, sweeping the top-three spots in the 400-yard IM, all finishing within a second of each other. Junior Molly Smyers tapped in first (4:30.26), followed by junior Julia Knox in second (4:30.93) and first-year Zoe Schneider in third (4:30.94), who earned her first top-three finish for the Buff and Blue.

Ava DeAngelis tapped in second in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:04.44).

Moriah Freitas took third place in the 100-yard butterfly (56.46), missing first place by less than half of a second. Freitas later took third in the 200-yard butterfly (2:06.72)

Olivia Paquette earned bronze on the 3-meter board (263.10).

Yulia Groysman picked up her first top-three finish with the Buff and Blue, finishing the 200-yard freestyle in third place (1:54.22). Phoebe Wright finished just behind Groysman in fourth place (1:55.02).

Schneider was back on the podium when she earned third in the 1000-yard freestyle (10:17.68). Ava Topolewski finished just behind Schneider in fourth place (10:18.27).

Wright finished the 200-yard backstroke in third place (2:02.62).

The women finished the meet on a high note with a second-place performance in the 200-yard medley relay (1:45.21), which was swam by Marlee Rickert, DeAngelis, Freitas and Riley Kudlac.
MEN'S HIGHLIGHTS

The men dominated the 100-yard butterfly on Saturday morning, finishing with each of the top-four spots. Redshirt senior and 100-yard butterfly A-10 record holder Matic won the race (47.69), followed by sophomore Daniel Nagy in second (49.19), senior Dylan Koo in third (50.48) and senior Ethan Tulenko in fourth (50.69).

Matic picked up his second race win of the day when he won the 100-yard backstroke (49.40). Karol Mlynarczyk took second (49.88) in the race after finishing within a half second of Matic.

The men's 400-yard freestyle 'A' team finished in second place (3:03.45), swam by Toni Dragoja, Matic, Mlynarczyk and Connor Rodgers.

Rodgers, who owns the A-10 record in the 400-yard IM, finished in second place in the event (4:02.12) behind only Kalvin Hahn of Army. Later, Rodgers earned another second-place finish in the 200-yard butterfly (1:50.76).

First-year Daniel Choi finished the 1,000-yard free in the top-three for the second meet in a row. Choi cut nearly eight seconds off his time from the season-opening meet to finish in second place (9:28.25). Misha Lyubavskiy followed Choi in fourth, while Philip Moldovanu finished in fifth (9:33.72).

Mlynarczyk found himself on the podium again when he finished the 200-yard backstroke in third place (1:50.05).

Preston Lin just missed out on a top-three finish in the 100-yard breaststroke, finishing in fourth (57.53) by .03 seconds.

The men capped the meet with a silver medal in the 200-yard medley relay (1:30.74), just .02 seconds behind Delaware. The relay was swam by Mlynarczyk, Lin, Matic and Ganesh Sivaramakrishnan.

GW swimming and diving returns to the pool on Saturday, Oct. 21 when it travels to Annapolis, Md. to take on Navy.
