WASHINGTON - After a competitive season-opening meet at home against Virginia Tech, the George Washington men's and women's swimming and diving teams are set to go for their second competition of the year, competing against Army, Delaware, Harvard, Northeastern (women only) and Rutgers (women only) at the Rutgers Invite. The meet begins with Session One at 5 p.m. on Friday, and continues with Sessions Two and Three at 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. on Saturday, respectively.
LAST TIME OUT
The Buff and Blue came out and competed well against a Virginia Tech program whose men finished last season ranked 10th and women finished ranked 25th (per Swim Cloud). GW won six events, including a sweep of the women's diving boards by junior Dara Reyblat (1m: 261.60; 3m: 264.08), and two individual race wins for both the men and women.
"We were happy with how we rose to the occasion," said head coach Brian Thomas. "We raced fairly well and just remained really competitive and aggressive with our approach throughout the meet, regardless of team score."
Moriah Freitas and Ava Topolewski, who are no strangers to touching in first, picked up race wins for the GW women. Freitas swam the fastest 100-yard butterfly (57.48), while Topolewski won the 1,000-yard freestyle (10:16.92) - both are events that the swimmers excelled in last season.Â
For the men, it was Connor Rodgers and Djurdje Matic who brought home race wins. Rodgers paced all swimmers in the 200-yard butterfly (1:51.37) - an event in which he set the A-10 record at the 2023 A-10 Championships. Matic clocked in the fastest time in the 100-yard butterfly (48.63) - an event in which he also holds a share of the A-10 record, which he earned at the 2022 NCAA Championships.
THOMAS ON THE RUTGERS INVITE
"I love that we've been able to add this meet," said Thomas. "It's a great facility and a great opportunity to train in an invitation-style meet. Really excited that this opportunity came up. Our team has handled it well. They're excited to travel for the first time and it's a great thing from a team-building standpoint too."Â Â Â
