WASHINGTON – GW women's tennis coach George Rodriguez welcomed on Wednesday two first-year student-athletes into the GW Athletics community. Isabella Giraldo and Solange Skeene will be joining the program in the fall.
Isabella Giraldo comes to GW from Boca Raton, Fla. A team captain in high school, Isabella won a Sportsmanship Award from the USTA in 2019.
Coach's comments:
"I'm extremely excited to have Isabella on the team. What a truly special experience to be able to play one year with her sister Gabriela. Isabella brings many attributes that will help contribute to the team including her will to succeed both on and off court. She brings a lot of tennis playing experience and one of the best attitudes I've come across that will fit perfectly to our team culture. She's a true team player with a strong tennis pedigree."
Isabella on her decision to come to GW:
"I chose GW because of its highly-rated business program, location and its community. Being able to keep playing tennis and getting my degree has been a goal of mine and GW fits perfectly."
Solange Skeene was born in Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago and attends Broward Virtual School in Florida. She competes for the Trinidad and Tobago Billie Jean King Cup Team, and is a former Tranquility Open women's singles winner and doubles finalist, as well as First Citizens Youth Sports Woman of the Year in tennis. She is also a member of the National Honor Society.
Coach's comments:
"Solange is one of the most dynamic personalities I've come across as a coach. She brings fire, dedication, commitment and passion to the court. She has the same passion for her academics. Her ceiling is high and she is just getting started. Solange brings a dynamic game to the court and her will to win will be one of the best attributes she lends to the team."
Solange on her decision to come to GW:
"I chose GW because I wanted a place that could challenge me to develop my skills both academically and athletically. Once I learned of GW's academic rigor and the goals and objectives of Coach Rodriguez's program, the decision was an easy one."
