Following a decision made by the NCAA Division I Board of Directors and recommended by the NCAA Division I Committee on Academics, the NCAA national office released today Academic Progress Rates for every DI institution. At George Washington, the university saw seven programs recognized with a perfect multiyear rate.
GW's men's track and cross country, women's rowing, women's swimming & diving, women's tennis, volleyball and men's water polo teams were honored.
"In the ever-evolving landscape of college athletics, there is one thing at GW that will never change," said Director of Athletics Tanya Vogel. "Our student-athletes are students first, and we are committed to their higher education so that they can later become professionals in an industry of their choice. It is to the complete credit of our student-athletes for recognizing their academic priorities, while also showcasing the university around the world in an athletics forum. We are grateful to them, as well as to our coaches, administrators, faculty and staff who ensure that our North Star guides us to educating the next leaders of our global community."
The APR is an annual scorecard of academic achievement calculated for all Division I athletics teams across the country. It provides a real-time look at a team's academic success each semester by tracking the academic progress of each student-athlete on scholarship. The APR accounts for eligibility, retention and graduation and provides a measure of each team's academic performance.
Today's announcement is part of the overall Division I academic reform effort and is intended to highlight teams that demonstrate a commitment to academic progress and retention of student-athletes by achieving the top APRs within their respective sports.
The most recent APRs are multiyear rates based on scores from the 2019-20, 2020-21, 2021-22 and 2022-23 academic years.
