WASHINGTON - GW softball wrapped up the series against St. Bonaventure on Sunday, splitting Sunday's Senior Day doubleheader on The Vern. The Buff and Blue won the opener, 8-1, before falling in game two, 4-2.
GW 8, St. Bonaventure 1
Lockdown pitching from GW ace Rose Cano and a five-run sixth inning lifted GW over the Bonnies, 8-1, in the second game of the series on Sunday.
Cano was dealing in the win, allowing just one run off five hits and striking out eight. The first-year picked up her 13th victory of the season and is now just three wins shy of tying the GW rookie pitcher wins record (16).
The Buff and Blue struck first in the contest, scoring on a wild pitch in the fourth inning, and added another two runs in the fifth thanks to RBIs from Gabby Polsky and Ashley Corpuz.
The Bonnies cut the lead down to two with one run in the sixth, but GW shut the door in the bottom of the frame by adding five runs to its total.
Daniella Lew added the first run of the GW sixth after reaching on an error by the Bonnies' right fielder that scored Alena Ramirez. Then, Polsky collected her second RBI of the afternoon with a bases-loaded sac fly.
With two runners on, GW home run leader Reese Torres added another to her total, her sixth of the year, with a no-doubter to right field. Torres collected all three of her game-high RBI on the home run, which put the game out of arm's reach for St. Bonaventure.
Four Colonials submitted multi-hit games (Ritchie, Cano, Polsky, Ramirez) as GW tied its season-high hit total with 12 on its way to the 8-1 victory.
GW 2, St. Bonaventure 4
Maggie Greco went 3-for-3 at the plate with a walk, two doubles and both of GW's RBIs, but a late Bonnies' rally was the difference as St. Bonaventure took the series finale, 4-2.
Greco plated both of GW's runs in the finale on RBI doubles. She gave GW a 1-0 lead in the third inning after her double into right-center scored Lew, and later doubled GW's advantage in the fifth after plating Darbie Stancil on a double into left-center.
The Bonnies did all of their damage in the seventh inning, scoring four and taking a 4-2 lead, which they brought to the finish line.
The Buff and Blue didn't go down quietly, though, and loaded the bases with two outs in the bottom of the seventh, but weren't able to complete the comeback as St. Bonaventure clinched the win with a groundout.
Ramirez and Greco each had multi-hit games and GW held a 9-8 advantage in the hit department.
