BLOCK PARTY
GW set a team single-game record with 15 blocks in the overtime win over Navy, surpassing a mark that has stood since 1983. Individually, Babatunde Akingbola rejected 11 shots, a new individual single-game record. He surpassed Kevin Hall, who held the mark since blocking 10 shots in 1976.
Akingbola is second in the country with 33 blocks and 3.67 swats per contest. He is on pace to blow the current GW record (84 by Yinka Dare in 1992-93) out of the water, averaging 0.9 more blocks per game than Dare did in his record year. Only four players in GW history have ever recorded more than two blocks per game over the course of a season.
WORKING EXTRA
GW improved to 6-0 in overtime games under Coach Caputo, and 2-0 this season, with a 79-77 victory over Navy on Dec. 5. The Revolutionaries have won the six games by a combined 16 points and are 8-4 overall in games decided by five points or less under Caputo.
Tuesday's victory was the third of the six OT triumphs in which GW has trailed in the final minute of regulation or an extra session. The Buff & Blue have won their last seven overtime games overall, having not lost past regulation since Dec. 14, 2020.
A LOOK AT THE EAGLES
Coppin State is 1-9 on the season with its lone victory being an 89-70 thrashing of UMBC on Nov. 30. CSU has faced La Salle out of the A-10, an 81-62 loss, and share a common opponent with GW in Navy, suffering a 75-52 setback.
Justin Winston has been the primary catalyst of the Coppin offense with 13.2 ppg and 4.7 rpg. He is the lone Eagle averaging double digits and one of just three players to have appeared in each game. Winston is the reigning MEAC Co-Player of the Week after averaging 25.5 ppg, 7.5 rpg and 2.5 spg in the last two games.
Larry Stewart is in his first year at the helm of his alma mater after spending the last 14 years as an assistant at Bowie State, Morgan State and UMES.
