NEW YORK - The George Washington men's water polo team fell in a pair of tight competitions on Saturday to No. 15 Fordham and Wagner. The Buff and Blue lost, 11-10, to Fordham in the Bronx early on Saturday, before falling to Wagner, 14-10, in Staten Island on Saturday evening. GW falls to 3-6 in the MAWPC and 9-12 overall.
Fordham 11, GW 10
The Revolutionaries did all they could to slow the top team in the MAWPC but came up just short and lost, 11-10, midday on Saturday as the Rams completed the season sweep of GW.
GW held a 4-1 lead after the first quarter, but couldn't bring the lead into halftime and trailed 6-5 through 16 minutes. The sides traded goals for most of the second half, before GW found itself ahead with a 10-9 lead late in the fourth quarter. Fordham called a timeout with 2:57 seconds remaining to draw up a play, which worked as the Rams tied the game with 2:36 remaining, before eventually scoring the game-winner with 1:53 to go.
Viktor Jovanovic, in his first game after being named to the Cutino Award Watch List, paced GW with four goals. Andrija Sekulic dished out a team-best three assists, while Mateus Stellet scored three times and drew five ejections.
Wagner 14, GW 10
GW lost in the nightcap to Wagner, 14-10, in its first go-around of the season against the Seahawks.
The Buff and Blue kept the match close throughout, but trailed from the 7:14 mark in the second quarter through the end of the game. GW cut the lead down to two goals early in the fourth quarter, but wasn't able to score again as Wagner tacked on two more of its own.
Stellet and Sekulic finished tied with a team-high three goals. Sekelic added a team-high two assists, while Stellet drew a team-high five ejections.
