WASHINGTON -Â GW men's basketball standouts James Bishop IV and Maximus Edwards were honored by the Atlantic 10 on Tuesday in advance of the conference's annual media day. Bishop was selected by the league's coaches and select media members to the Preseason Atlantic 10 All-Conference First Team while Edwards earned Preseason Second Team honors.
Bishop is GW's first Preseason First Team All-Conference selection since Tyler Cavanaugh ahead of the 2016-17 campaign. The senior guard is coming off a thrilling 2022-23 season in which he became the first member of the Buff & Blue to win the A-10 scoring title since SirValiant Brown in 1999-00 and was GW's first representative on the All-Conference First Team since Pops Mensah-Bonsu in 2005-06.
The Baltimore, Md., native enters his final campaign in Foggy Bottom 12th all-time with 1,518 points at GW, 731 points shy of the all-time record. Last year, he became the first player in the A-10 to average 21.0 ppg and 5.0 apg since 2003.Â
Edwards aims for a repeat performance in his redshirt sophomore campaign after becoming GW's sixth player ever, and first since 2000, to win the A-10 Rookie of the Year award. Edwards led A-10 rookies in rebounding (6.5 rpg) and minutes played (33.7 mpg) last season and also ranked among the A-10's top freshmen in scoring (2nd), steals (4th) and assists (6th).
The K-State transfer was one of just three rookies in the country to average at least 10.5 ppg and 6.5 rpg while playing 33 or more mpg, joining Alabama's Brandon Miller and UCF's Taylor Hendricks. He elevated his game during A-10 play, averaging 11.2 ppg and 7.3 rpg with 11 double-digit performances and two double-doubles.
GW, which finished tied for sixth in the A-10 last year after being projected to finish 13th, was selected ninth in this year's preseason poll. Dayton was picked to win the league, earning 20 of 25 first-place votes.
Bishop is joined on the first team by Dayton's DaRon Holmes II, Duquesne's Dae Dae Grant, St. Bonaventure's Daryl Banks III, Saint Joseph's Erik Reynolds II and Saint Louis' Gibson Jimerson.
Edwards joins Dayton's Malachi Smith, Duquene's Jimmy Clarke III, La Salle's Khalil Brantley, Loyola Chicago's Philip Alston and VCU's Max Shulga on the second team.
