Watkinson nets hat trick
WASHINGTON – A Duquesne goal with 25 seconds on the clock was the decision-maker in GW lacrosse's 15-14 loss to the Dukes on Saturday.
GW and Duquesne battled back-and-forth at the Mount Vernon Lacrosse Field, with six ties throughout the 60 minutes of action. The Dukes jumped ahead to a 3-1 lead in the first quarter and pushed their advantage to 5-2 in the opening minutes of the second. The Buff & Blue went on to outscore the visitors 4-2 thanks to a pair of tallies from Sophia Watkinson and scores from Maddy O'Brien and Ashley Geyer.
After the break, Tori Hampton and Kendall Lambert quickly connected for the first goal of the third quarter to tie the contest at seven. This time, GW outscored the Dukes 4-2 in the final 12 minutes of the third frame to take a 12-9 advantage into the fourth.
After Duquense trimmed GW's lead to two off an opening fourth-quarter goal, Alana Greene and Phoebe Mullarkey potted a pair for GW, giving the home team the largest lead of the afternoon at 14-10. Duquesne then found its offensive rhythm, scoring five unanswered, including the game-winner with 25 seconds remaining in regulation, to take home the 15-14 victory.
Five student-athletes registered multi-goal games for GW, including Watkinson (3), Mullarkey (2), Greene (2), O'Brien (2) and Lambert (2). Hampton tallied a career-high four assists on the day and registered three shots, putting one on net. Megan Patrick made 13 saves on 28 shots faced.
