Sierra Lange leads Buff & Blue into 2022 season
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Amid final preparations for the 2022 season, GW softball has been tabbed as the favorite to repeat as Atlantic 10 champion.
In a vote of the league's head coaches, the Buff and Blue received four of nine first-place votes and 74 points to edge Fordham (71 points) for the top spot. Saint Joseph's (55), Massachusetts (54) and Saint Louis (42) were next in line.
GW will look to build off the success of a historic 2021 campaign. The Buff and Blue put together an unforgettable run, compiling a 37-11 overall record on the way to A-10 regular season and tournament titles before closing their season at the Baton Rouge Regional. They'd shared the conference crown with Fordham in 2019 before the 2020 campaign was halted by the COVID-19 pandemic.
This spring, GWÂ will write the next chapter under the direction of first-year Head Coach Chrissy Schoonmaker.
Reigning A-10 Pitcher of the Year Sierra Lange and three-time All-Conference pick Alessandra Ponce lead the way for a group that features 16 returners, including five who made at least 45 starts last spring. A trio of newcomers join the mix, headlined by Maddy Dwyer, a graduate student via Stanford who brings experience pitching at the highest levels of the sport.
GW will get its season started this weekend with four challenging games over three days at South Carolina's Gamecock Invitational, beginning with a matchup vs. North Carolina on Friday afternoon.
This season's A-10 slate features 24 games via weekend series vs. the other eight clubs in the league. The top six teams in the conference standings advance to the A-10 Championship, which will be held May 11-14 at George Mason.
