Colonials battle Rams at 7 p.m. on MASN2 and ESPN+
WASHINGTON - GW men's basketball begins a road-heavy portion of its A-10 schedule with a Tuesday matchup against VCU in Richmond. Tip is set for 7 p.m. on ESPN+ and in the D.C. area on MASN2.
FREE FOR ALL: First-year Brayon Freeman reset his career high for the second straight game on Saturday vs. Dayton, canning five 3-pointers en route to a 17-point performance. Freeman was 5-of-9 from deep after hitting just six triples (6-of-14) in his first 12 games.
The D.C. native also dished out five assists to improve his assist-to-turnover ratio to 3.0 (27:9) over the last five contests. For the season, Freeman holds a 1.5 assist-to-turnover ratio, which is good for 10th in the A-10 and second among league freshmen.
MORE ON BRAY: Not only has Freeman found the passing touch, he has averaged 13.5 ppg and 5.8 apg during his career-long, four-game double-digit scoring streak, shooting 45% (18-of-40) from the floor and 57.1% (8-of-14) from beyond the arc.
Over the last nine games, Freeman is averaging 10.6 ppg and has scored at least eight points in all but one game. Oddly enough, the only game he didn't was when he was held scoreless in his lone start of the year vs. Missouri State. Freeman is aiming to become the second Colonial freshman under Head Coach Jamion Christian to average double digits, following Jamison Battle (11.8 ppg) in 2019-20.
BAM-BAM: Joe Bamisile notched his second 25-point effort in three games on Saturday vs. Dayton, hitting 10-of-18 from the floor to go along with six boards, plus career highs in steals (4) and assists (3). Bamisile now has four 20-point efforts this season, most on the team, and has reached double digits nine times, trailing only James Bishop's 10 for most on the squad.
Bamisile has been incredibly efficient in GW's wins, averaging 16.7 ppg and shooting 57% while averaging 12.8 ppg and shooting 39% in losses. His effort vs. Coppin State was the first 25-point, 10-board double-double for a Colonial since Tyler Cavanaugh scored 33 points with 10 rebounds in a win over St. Bonaventure on Feb. 11, 2017.
A LOOK AT THE RAMS: VCU has won six consecutive contests coming into Tuesday's matchup, including back-to-back road conference wins at Dayton (53-52) and La Salle (85-66). The Rams have one of the best defenses in the country, ranking second in adjusted defensive efficiency (0.873 points per possession) and fifth in effective field goal percentage defense (41.4%). VCU also paces the nation in 3-point defense (24.3%) and forces a turnover on 27% of its possessions, fifth-best in the country.
Vince Williams is the lone Ram averaging double digits with 11.3 points per game. Williams also leads the team in rebounds (6.1) and assists (2.8) per game. Ace Baldwin Jr. has started the last five games after missing time with injury, and chips in 9.8 ppg.
