Colonials return home to face George Mason Monday
RICHMOND, Va. - GW men's basketball was unable to find its footing against one of the nation's stingiest defenses on Tuesday night, falling to VCU, 84-57, at the Siegel Center.
The Rams entered the night third in the country in adjusted defensive efficiency and proved their might, limiting the Colonials to just 22 points in the first half while forcing 13 turnovers to build a 20-point lead at intermission.
James Bishop gave the Colonials an early spark with back-to-back buckets in the opening 75 seconds, but GW was held off the board for the next five minutes as VCU went on a 13-0 run to assume complete control.
The Buff & Blue saw their reserve lineup bring some much-needed energy as part of a 16-2 spurt during the second half. Qwanzi Samuels contributed four points as part of the run while Cornell transfer Bryan Knapp scored his first five points while donning the Buff & Blue.
Bishop topped GW with 16 points on 6-of-17 shooting, while Joe Bamisile tallied 11 on 5-of-9 from the floor. Brayon Freeman, who earned his second start of the year, reached double digits for the fifth-straight contest with 10 points and three assists.
GW now will head back to the Smith Center on Monday for the first of two Revolutionary Rivalry matchups this season with George Mason. The special Martin Luther King Jr. Day matinee is set for a 2 p.m. tip on CBS Sports Network.
