Buff and Blue look to extend four-game winning streak
Riding a four-game winning streak, GW men's water polo heads to the West Coast for three non-conference games over two days.
The Buff and Blue are set to face No. 18 Cal Baptist (1:15 p.m. ET at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps) and Westcliff (5 p.m. ET at University of La Verne) in a Friday doubleheader as part of the Gary Troyer Memorial Tournament before visiting No. 19 Loyola Marymount on Saturday for a 2 p.m. ET start. (Please note the time and opponent change on the second game of Friday's twin bill.)
LAST TIME OUT: GW improved to 3-0 in MAWPC play with a perfect weekend spread across three different locations. The Buff and Blue earned a 12-11 win at Johns Hopkins last Friday before returning home Saturday to defeat Mount St. Mary's, 20-13, at Smith Center Pool. On Sunday, they traveled to Bucknell and scored an 8-5 victory over the Bison at Kinney Natatorium.
Andras Levai was honored as the MAWPC Player of the Week after totaling 11 goals and six assists in the three victories, while goalkeeper Luca Castorina picked up his second straight Defensive Player of the Week award in recognition of a stellar run in net in which he recorded 36 saves against 23 goals allowed, plus nine steals and three assists.Â
LEVAI'S LEGACY: In his fifth season in Buff and Blue, Levai has solidified his place among the program's all-time greats.
With a team-leading 46 points this season, the graduate student from Budapest, Hungary, has 458 career points, putting him fourth in program history and just 63 behind Glauco Souza for the top spot.
Levai has moved up to second in career assists (195) behind only Atakan Destici (238) and fifth in career goals (263) trailing Souza (387), Brent Stoll (325), Andrew Mavis (279) and Patrick Holley (265).
Levai's 177 career steals also rank fifth all-time.
COMING UP CLUTCH: Viktor Jovanovic has shown a knack for timely scoring of late with a pair of game-winning goals during the four-game winning streak.
On Sept. 18, Jovanovic's go-ahead score with 1:40 left in the second overtime period turned out to be the difference in a 12-11 win over Brown at Harvard's Blodgett Pool.
Last Friday, the Buff and Blue turned to the sophomore center again in a big spot, and he delivered the tie-breaking tally with 40 seconds remaining in the 12-11 victory at Johns Hopkins.
Through 11 games, Jovanovic ranks fifth on the squad with 11 goals, and he's also recorded a team-high 26 ejections drawn.
SCOUTING THE COMPETITION: The defending WWPA champion, Cal Baptist is 3-8 on the season amid a difficult schedule, heading into a conference doubleheader on Thursday. The 18th-ranked Lancers are led by PJ McDonough, who was named to the ACWPC All-America Second Team for his play during the abbreviated spring season.
An NAIA program based in Irvine, Calif., Westcliff is in its first season of varsity competition.
No. 19 Loyola Marymount (2-9) has dropped seven straight games with all of them vs. ranked opponents. With 35 points via 25 goals and 10 assists, Joseph Shaw paces the Lions' attack.
UP NEXT: GW returns to MAWPC play next weekend with a trip to New York City for a split doubleheader at Fordham and Wagner.
