Colonials enter year with high hopes following spring season
WASHINGTON - GW cross country gets its season started on Friday morning, heading to Emmitsburg, Md., for the Mount St. Mary's 5k Duals. The men's race is scheduled for an 11 a.m. start, followed by the women's race.
THE COMPETITION: The Buff & Blue are expected to compete against the host Mountaineers in addition to UMBC, Howard, Maryland (women only), Franklin & Pierce and Kutztown. The GW men have won the duals in two of the last four iterations of the event (2016, 2018).
PRESEASON POLLS: GW's women, buoyed by returning all-conference performers Margaret Coogan, Kathryn Nohilly and Peri Pavicic, were projected to finish second in the preseason poll. The group is also ranked ninth in the preseason Mid-Atlantic region poll.
The GW men, bringing back nearly every member of last year's team, are projected to finish sixth this year. Ryan Fowkes earned All-Conference honors in March, becoming the first GW harrier to earn the award since 2018.
ABOUT LAST YEAR: The three All-Conference performers led the GW women to a third-place finish in the A-10 meet, the second straight year finishing amongst the top three. The Buff & Blue have had five different All-Conference honorees in the last two seasons and Coogan (second) and Nohilly (third) ran two of the three fastest times in program history in the spring.
On the men's side, GW's fifth-place finish at the A-10 meet was its highest since 2017 and only the second time since 2002 that the program finished in the top five. Fowkes' 8k time went down as the seventh-fastest in program history.
