Buff & Blue continue non-conference slate in NYC
GW men's soccer continues its non-conference schedule on Friday with a visit to Columbia. The 1 p.m. kickoff from Rocco B. Commisso Soccer Stadium in New York City will be broadcast via ESPN+.
LAST TIME OUT: GW played Howard to a 1-1 draw on Monday evening.
The Bison held the lead until Liam Emson headed home the equalizer off a cross from Tom Cooklin in the 88th minute. The Buff and Blue held a 9-1 advantage on shots across 20 minutes of overtime but settled for a tie in the crosstown matchup.
MAKING PLAYS: A member of the A-10 All-Championship and All-Academic teams last season, Cooklin has three assists through two games this season to tie for the national lead in the early going.
The junior midfielder ranked 21st nationally during the spring season in tallying 0.56 assists per game, and he's picked up right where he left off in setting up a pair of goals in the season-opening 4-0 win over VMI before he connected with Emson vs. Howard.
Thanks to his fast start, Cooklin now has eight helpers in his past nine outings dating back to the spring.
STRENGTH IN NUMBERS: Emson became GW's fourth different goal scorer on the young season, joining Oscar Haynes Brown, Nico Krueger and Carlyle Smart.
The Buff and Blue had four goal scorers back in the spring on their run to their first A-10 Championship final since 2011 with Haynes Brown and Sandro Weber combining to provide eight of the team's 10 scores across 10 contests.
In total, eight different members of the Buff and Blue have tallied at least one point through the two games. That's already more than the seven who recorded points during the spring.
SCOUTING THE LIONS: Columbia is set for its season debut on Friday. The Lions were slotted seventh out of eight clubs in the Ivy League preseason poll.
UP NEXT: GW returns to the Mount Vernon Campus for two home games next week. The Buff and Blue host Liberty on Tuesday afternoon, before welcoming Navy next Friday.
