Colonials look to improve positioning in A-10 standings
GW men's soccer hosts VCU on Saturday afternoon in the first leg of back-to-back matchups vs. the Rams. The Atlantic 10 contest kicks off at 1 p.m. on the Mount Vernon Campus.
The teams are set to meet again Wednesday at Sports Backers Stadium in Richmond, Va., in a match rescheduled following this week's weather-related postponement.
LAST TIME OUT: GW tied with Davidson, 1-1, last Saturday in its first A-10 home match of the season. Sandro Weber's first goal of the season put the Buff and Blue in front in the 22nd minute before the Wildcats answered back to equalize in the 84th minute.
It was GW's second draw of the week to begin conference play and its fourth straight OT game to start the spring season.
MAKING THE GRADY: Justin Grady was honored as A-10 Defensive Player of the Week for the second time on Monday after allowing one goal over 220 minutes between the pipes last week.
The sophomore goalkeeper matched his season high with four saves vs. Davidson after recording a clean sheet on March 17 with three stops at George Mason. For the season, he has allowed just two goals across four contests, registering 14 saves and a .875 save percentage.
TIMELY TIM: A first-year from Daun, Germany, Tim Neumann has had a hand in both GW scores thus far in his rookie season.
Against Davidson, Neumann grabbed a steal and quickly passed to Tom Cooklin, whose cross found Weber's head in front for the goal. The midfielder also assisted on Oscar Haynes Brown's overtime game-winner in the season opener vs. Mount St. Mary's.
Neumann has started all four games to begin his collegiate career, and his 350 total minutes rank second on the squad among field players.
WORKING OVERTIME: GW hasn't had a run of overtime games like this in over three decades. The program's all-time record book shows the Buff and Blue haven't played four straight OT games since the 1984 season when they went beyond regulation in five consecutive outings vs. Brooklyn College (0-0 T), William & Mary (1-1 T), West Virginia (0-0 T), La Salle (2-2 T) and Towson (3-2 L).
SCOUTING VCU: The Rams (2-1-2) are on top of the early standings in the A-10's Central Pod with a 1-0-1 mark vs. conference opponents. Most recently, they played George Mason to a scoreless draw last Saturday afternoon.
Celio Pompeu has a team-high three goals after registering a hat trick in a 3-2 win at Elon on March 7, while veteran goalkeeper Mario Sequeira has recorded three shutouts in his four starts.

Feb. 9, 2021 marked the 200th anniversary of the U.S. Congress' establishment of The George Washington University's charter. GW Athletics is proud to be part of the university's bicentennialcelebration, honoring the historic milestone with a variety of initiatives meant to highlight the best of the Buff and Blue. The Valparaiso, Chile, native tallied 94 points via 27 goals and 40 assists over his collegiate career, with all three of those totals still ranked among the program's all-time top 10.
