FAIRFAX, Va. - Playing shorthanded on Sunday against Rhode Island, GW played on adrenaline and the thrill of being back in action after a 35-day layoff to pull off a memorable win that the Buff and Blue won't soon forget. For the first 20 minutes at George Mason Wednesday, the squad kept going full throttle and assumed a 36-23 lead at halftime at EagleBank Arena. Unfortunately, reality struck in the second half. GW ran out of gas and ultimately fell 63-58 to the Patriots after getting outscored 40-22 in the second half.
Ricky Lindo Jr. continued to be a bright spot with his third double-double in four games at George Washington, with 12 points, 14 rebounds, two blocks and a steal in the full 40 minutes. James Bishop and Jamison Battle also didn't get a rest, with Bishop leading the way with 15 points and Battle netting 11. Tyler Brelsford also got into the double-digit action with a career-high 11 for the first-year high school teammate of Bishop's. Brelsford's 11 came on an efficient 4-of-6 night from the floor, and his hands were active on the defensive end with two steals.
The defensive effort in the first half set the stage for another win, but Mason came out physically aggressive in the second while the tired visitors ran out of steam. After Battle, Bishop and Lindo logged 36+ minutes each Sunday after the lengthy Covid pause, going the distance Wednesday took its toll late.
In the battle for postseason positioning there's no rest for the weary, as GW now faces a quick turnaround to hit the road. Up next for the Buff and Blue is an away date with the Bonnies in St. Bonaventure on Friday. Tip time from the Empire State is 6 p.m.
