ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. - On short rest and with its top three scorers having played 76+ minutes in two games already this week, including 40 apiece for Jamison Battle, James Bishop and Ricky Lindo on Wednesday night, the GW men's basketball team knew it faced a tough test Friday night at St. Bonaventure, who entered play with a league-best 10-3 A-10 record and squarely in the mix for a coveted at-large berth to the NCAA Tournament. Time quickly told how long the night would be.
While the Bonnies came out scorching in their home gym, the Buff and Blue never got going. St. Bonaventure shot 17-of-31 from the field (.548) in the first half, including 8-of-14 from 3-point range (.571), while GW was only able to muster an 8-of 24 first half performance from the field (.333) without a 3-point make. The 42-21 halftime deficit and the tired legs of GW's Big Three sent the starters to the bench early in the second, allowing the reserves to get considerable second-half playing time. While St. Bonaventure ran away with an 88-41 win, GW's starters got some needed rest and a pair of recruited walk-ons got an opportunity to make memories. Grad student Brandon Leftwich threw down a highlight reel dunk, while sophomore Miles Gally made his collegiate debut in seven minutes of action and grabbed his first-ever rebound.
Jamison Battle led GW with 10 points, while five Bonnies reached double-digits. St. Bonaventure never cooled down and finished .583 from the floor and .517 from 3-point range (15-of-29).
GW finishes the regular season with a 3-5 conference mark and will be either the 11th or 12th seed in next week's A-10 Championship. A first-round date with either Saint Joseph's or Fordham looms Wednesday at the Siegel Center in Richmond, Va.
