Retrievers scored golden goal in 106th minute
BALTIMORE - In its road opener, George Washington men's soccer battled UMBC into double-overtime on Tuesday afternoon before the home side broke through with the golden goal to claim a 1-0 victory.
GW kept the pressure on UMBC throughout the contest with nine shots on goal, but with a scoreless draw looming, the Retrievers were able to capitalize on a corner kick in the 106nd minute.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- 106th Minute: GW wasn't able to clear Jago Lott's corner kick, and Taylor Calheira was waiting at the top of the 18-yard box to hit a volley that found the net. (UMBC 1, GW 0)
NOTEWORTHY
- It was the second straight game to begin the season that GW played into extra time after 90 scoreless minutes. On Saturday, Oscar Haynes Brown helped the Buff and Blue beat Mount St. Mary's with a golden goal in the 102nd minute.
- GW outshot UMBC, 14-12, on the day with the visitors forcing Quantrell Jones to make nine saves to preserve his clean sheet. Sandro Weber, Grant Barrientos and Alhaji Turay each put a pair of tries on frame for the Buff and Blue.
- The reigning A-10 Defensive Player of the Week, GW keeper Justin Grady made a season-high four saves before conceding his first goal of the spring after more than 207 total scoreless minutes.
- GW's best scoring opportunity came in the 19th minute when Weber's rocket was pushed aside by Jones, who immediately made a sprawling save to grab Matthew Brummet's header on the rebound.
