Trio of Colonials honored after season-opening win
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Following its season-opening win over Mount St. Mary's, GW men's soccer swept the Atlantic 10 weekly awards on Monday with Oscar Haynes Brown (Offensive Player of the Week), Justin Grady (Defensive Player of the Week) and Tim Neumann (Rookie of the Week) honored.
This is the first time since the A-10 went to three weekly awards for the 2016 season that the Colonials claimed all of them in the same week.
Haynes Brown shared Offensive Player of the Week honors with Luca Nicastro of St. Bonaventure in recognition of his golden goal in the 102nd minute vs. the Mountaineers on Saturday.
The game-winner was the dynamic forward's 18th career goal and first in more than two years after missing most of the 2019 campaign due to injury. It's the second career Offensive Player of the Week award for Haynes Brown, who was previously honored on Aug. 27, 2018.
Haynes Brown was also honored as GWsports.com's Colonial of the Week for his efforts in the victory over the Mountaineers.
Grady was named the conference's top defender after making three saves to blank Mount St. Mary's in the season opener. Thanks to his fourth shutout in eight career starts, the sophomore keeper received the A-10 weekly honor for the second time (Sept. 16, 2019).
Neumann received Rookie of the Week honors after assisting on the game-winning score. The first-year midfielder got the start in his collegiate debut and helped end it by threading the needle with an excellent pass to free Haynes Brown behind the Mount St. Mary's defense.
Looking to improve to 2-0, the Buff and Blue are back in action on Tuesday, visiting UMBC for a 4 p.m. kickoff.
