Colonials look to improve to 2-0
After taking its season opener in thrilling fashion over the weekend, GW men's soccer looks to improve to 2-0 on Tuesday when it visits UMBC for a 4 p.m. start.
The Colonials and Retrievers had their previously scheduled matchup on Feb. 13 wiped out due to weather before rescheduling this midweek meeting in Baltimore, which is set to be streamed via the America East Digital Network.
LAST TIME OUT: GW took down Mount St. Mary's, 1-0, in its opener on Saturday on Oscar Haynes Brown's golden goal in the 102nd minute. The Buff and Blue battled the Mountaineers into double-overtime before first-year Tim Neumann found Haynes Brown behind the defense to set up the winning score.
On Monday, the Buff and Blue swept the A-10 weekly awards with Haynes Brown (Offensive Player of the Week), Justin Grady (Defensive Player of the Week) and Neumann honored.
ZEROED IN: Grady made three stops to shutout Mount St. Mary's, including a stop just before Haynes Brown's clutch strike. It was the fourth shutout in eight career starts for the sophomore keeper. He enters play Tuesday with a 1.36 GAA thanks to 29 saves vs. 12 goals against.
INSTANT IMPACT: With his assist, Neumann became the first GW first-year to tally a point in the season opener since Yoni Berhanu contributed an assist vs. George Mason on Aug. 29, 2008. The rookie from Daun, Germany, logged 76 minutes in the midfield vs. the Mountaineers and was one of three newcomers to start the opener, joined by defenders Aaron Kronenberg and Hrólfur Sveinsson.
SCOUTING THE RETRIEVERS: Picked seventh in the America East preseason poll, UMBC makes its season debut in Tuesday's contest. The Retrievers went 6-9-1 in 2019, including a 4-1 victory over GW on the Mount Vernon Campus.
Ryan Becher is back after tying for the team lead with 12 points in 2019 and earning America East All-Rookie honors, while Quantrell Jones (.712 save pct.) returns in net for his junior season.
This marks the sixth straight season that these programs will meet in a non-conference matchup.
