Bishop matches season-high, joined by Adams and Freeman in double digits
CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Despite a second straight 23-point performance from James Bishop and a season-high 10 3-pointers, GW men's basketball was unable to overcome an uncharacteristically poor day on the defensive end in an 86-79 loss at Charlotte.
Beyond Bishop's 23, Brayon Freeman was all over the floor for GW as the first-year tallied 11 points, but more impressively registered a career-high eight assists and six steals. Both the assists and steals were individual highs for a Colonial this season.
Bishop scored his 23 on an efficient 9-of-18 shooting while tying his career-high in threes with five. Brendan Adams notched double digits for the first time in four games with 18 points on the back of three trifectas.
As a team, GW shot 47% overall and 54% in the second half. The Buff & Blue also had a season-best 21 points off 17 Charlotte turnovers, but saw the 49ers score 25 off of 15 miscues. CLT also shot 51% from the floor for the game and was 19-of-21 at the line.
The Colonials had momentum in the first half, using an 11-0 run to take their largest lead of the game, 21-15, midway through the stanza. But Charlotte awoke afterwards, rattling off eight straight and 15 of the next 17 points to push in front. The 49ers ultimately finished the half on an elongated 24-6 run to go into the locker room up 41-29.
GW was unable to make much headway in the second 20 until it was too late as the teams went shot-for-shot in the high-scoring affair. The Buff & Blue got within nine, 55-46, with 11 minutes to go, but then went scoreless over the next three minutes as Charlotte reassumed a 14-point edge.
A pressing defense began to make headway in the late stages as GW hit 11 of its final 13 field goal attempts over the last six minutes and closed to within five, 84-79, on a Bishop triple with five seconds left. Charlotte hit all but one of its free throws, though, to keep GW at bay down the stretch.
The Buff & Blue will now take aim at a season-long four game homestand that runs the rest of December, beginning on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. when Coppin State visits the Smith Center. The game will be streamed on ESPN+.
