Colonials downed Salem and Saint Francis (Pa.) on Saturday
LEWISBURG, Pa. - George Washington women's water polo earned a pair of wins Saturday at the Bucknell Invitational.
The Colonials first downed Salem University, 12-10, at Kinney Natatorium and then completed the doubleheader sweep with an 8-6 victory over Saint Francis (Pa.).
Alana Ponce tallied four goals in each game to pace the Buff and Blue, who improved to 3-4 on the season.
GW 12, Salem University 10: The Colonials eased past the Tigers to avenge an opening-weekend loss.
Salem was within 8-7 early in the third quarter before GW dug in defensively and held the Tigers scoreless for more than a quarter of game action. The Colonials put together a run of four straight goals during that stretch, pushing the lead to 12-7 on Kira Bruno's goal with 3:01 left.
Ponce filled the stat sheet with four goals, plus two assists, two field blocks, a steal and an ejection drawn.
Marina Daroca Bazán chipped in three goals and two assists, while Bruno and Amanda Reeder both found the net twice.
Mackenzie Matheny was solid in net with nine stops, plus a pair of assists.
GW 8, Saint Francis 6: In the nightcap, the Colonials clamped down defensively to best the Red Flash.
GW scored the game's first three goals and allowed just two tallies over the first three quarters to build a comfortable cushion.
Daroca Bazán's goal with 2:48 left in the third quarter extended GW's advantage to 6-2, and the Colonials did enough down the stretch defensively to hold off Saint Francis.
The Red Flash edged within two goals three times in the final quarter but could never get any closer.
Ponce accounted for half of GW's goals with Reeder (two), Daroca Bazán and Mia Rosenblatt also in on the scoring. It was the first career goal for Rosenblatt, a first-year from California.
Hannah Hathaway made an impact as a facilitator, tallying three assists.
Between the pipes, Matheny put together her second nine-save outing of the day.
